Finnish companies wish Uponor hyvää syntymäpäivää

Uponor celebrated its 100th anniversary last week by connecting with the company’s Finnish heritage and looking forward to its continuing growth in the UK as Finnish businesses and VIPs gathered to wish the heating, cooling and plumbing specialist 'hyvää syntymäpäivää' ('Happy Birthday').

Uponor can trace its roots back to 1620 and was established as a carpentry workshop in the Finnish town of Lahti in 1918. The company first began manufacturing plastic pipes in Finland in 1965 and has since grown to a €1.2 billion global business operating out of more than 30 countries worldwide, with the UK business established in 1997.

UK managing director, John Fahy, said: “Uponor has come a long way in the past 100 years and we are now global leaders in solutions as diverse as district heating pipe networks, underfloor heating, multi-layer composite pipes and thermally active building systems (TABS). Our continuing innovation is only possible because of the pioneering approach of the original Finnish business established a century ago and this celebration is our way of acknowledging those roots and connecting the Finnish business community in the UK today with one of its most successful global exports.”

Uponor linked up with the Finnish-British Chamber of Commerce (FBCC) to invite a variety of Finnish business delegates to join the company’s 100 year anniversary celebrations at its Watford headquarters. Following a presentation from Mr Fahy on the company’s heritage, current activities and future plans, the delegates were able to explore the range of heating, cooling and plumbing solutions available from Uponor in the company’s spacious exhibition area, before gathering for the cutting of the birthday cake.

Emma Jalonen from the FBCC said: “We’re always looking for opportunities for our members to network and to increase visibility for Finnish businesses in the UK so we were delighted when Uponor decided to incorporate its Finnish heritage into its 100th anniversary event.

“100 years in business is a massive achievement for any company and Uponor seems to be going from strength to strength with lots of innovation to take them forward into their next century. We’d like to wish them sincere 'onnea' (congratulations) on their anniversary and all their achievements.”

After cutting and enjoying a 100-year birthday cake, the delegates joined Uponor’s staff for a buffet and reception, rounding off the Finnish-themed celebrations. A further staff-only party was also held, bringing the Uponor team together to enjoy a BBQ, DJ and games.

Mr Fahy added: “It’s not every day you get to celebrate such a momentous anniversary or connect with your heritage and this event has been very special. We’d like to thank the Finnish-British Chamber of Commerce, the Finnish Embassy, Business for Finland and all our delegates for making it so memorable.”
