Fans & Ventilation: EC motor boosts fan efficiency

Flakt Woods now offers a box fan range that incorporates EC motors, which help deliver higher fan efficiencies and lower energy consumption. The EC TwinBox fan, which has integral controls, delivers air volumes up to 1.7 m3/s, against static pressures of up to 870 Pa.

Says the company: 'By incorporating EC motor technology, energy usage is minimised, which means that specific fan powers are low. Motors feature a soft start function, which reduces starting currents as well as mechanical stresses, helping to make this product more reliable and extending its lifespan. Associated cabling and control gear costs are also reduced.'

A flexible control strategy, which is an integral part of the intelligent fan controller, is said to make it easy to customise the product to suit either variable or constant pressure systems. The processor at the heart of the fan controller is designed to respond to input signals received from a range of sensors including PIR, pressure, air quality, temperature and humidity sensors. All sensors are supplied with a 10 m length of cable attached, which can be wired and terminated on site, into a connection plug, which is fitted inside the intelligent fan control unit.

This connection strategy is designed to make on-site installation of cabling more straightforward, while standardised connection logic is said to make cable connection to the ICU plug easy.

Flakt Woods concludes: 'As no interconnecting wiring is required between sensors and their associated valves, or from dampers (at extraction points) back to the fan, installation is simple. In addition, labour costs are reduced when compared to conventional systems.'
