McAlpine & Co, the Glasgow-based plastic plumbing products manufacturer, was awarded two top honours at the Herald Scottish Family Business Awards 2017, in association with Business Gateway.

The first honour presented was for Scottish Family Business of the Year (Large). The second honour, the Outstanding Contribution Award, serves as a public recognition of the significant long-term contribution made by an individual who has played a key part in building and sustaining a company’s growth. This was awarded to Graham McAlpine.

Mr McAlpine has stewarded the company for the last 55 years, and continues to do so at the age of 81, playing a hands-on role in the family business.

Founded in 1902, McAlpine takes pride in constant innovation and is widely acknowledged for developing a number of ‘firsts’ in its industry. In 1957, for example, it became the first UK company to manufacture plastic traps.

With three manufacturing factories and a further five premises in the Glasgow area, and ownership of a distributor in the US, McAlpine employs over 750 people and manufactures over 4500 individual products. With a worldwide distributor network, the business exports specifically designed products to over eighty countries.
