CO2 and why blogs and porn are wrecking the planet

The conference was attended by all sectors of the building industry including architects, consultants, m&e contractors, installers and equipment suppliers. There was also a large contingent from the energy supply industry. These delegates all shared an interest in reducing our energy usage and therefore the CO2 emissions from the buildings we all use.

Some interesting statistics were given throughout the day, 45% of the UK's CO2 emissions come from buildings, 27% from houses and 18% from commercial buildings. The main focus seems to be from commercial buildings, as convincing home owners to spend money reducing energy use is proving a tough nut to crack.

The most startling statistic for me was this one:-

The CO2 emissions produced from computer servers will exceed those of aviation by 2012.

So somewhere out there in computerland is a little box is pouring out heat and CO2 just so that this blog can be stored and available for you to read at your leisure.

It is estimated that 50% of internet's content is porn, I haven’t personally researched this but I read it on Wikipedia.

Clearly the plan of action should be to stop people uploading all their out of focus photos, videos and other dubious data to theirservers and reduce demand immediately.

Of course this won’t happen. This is invisible energy use that nobody appears to pay for. Aeroplanes and buildings are great big things we can all see and so are much easier to pick on.

I am starting a campaign to save the planet, please don’t read this and petition the editor to dump my blog in the interests of the planet.

If I receive 10,000 complaints I will stop writing these things and sit around at home in the dark, reading a book, not surfing the web.
