BESA backs campaign to boost recovery

The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) is backing new guidance, issued to homeowners for when they have tradespeople carry out work in and around their homes.

Rachel Davidson, director of certification at BESA

The Work Safe. Safe Work campaign has been developed by TrustMark, the only government endorsed quality scheme for tradespeople, with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). BESA members automatically qualify to register for Trustmark status thanks to the rigorous nature of the Competence Assessment Standard they pass in order to earn the BESA badge.

The booklet, which can be downloaded or given to the homeowner before the visit to the property, gives practical advice to homeowners about what COVID-safety measures should be discussed and carried out before, during and after work is done in and around their home. It also sets out the need for conversations to be had with the tradesperson and sets out what types of tasks are the responsibility of the homeowner, such as disinfecting door handles before and after the tradesperson comes into the home. It also sets out what responsibilities lie with the tradesperson, such as providing their own PPE. It provides simple and clear information on tasks that should be completed and a list of helpful questions to ask.

Rachel Davidson, director of certification at BESA said: “As the lockdown restrictions are easing across the country more homeowners will be having work carried out in their homes. This is incredibly important not only for the construction industry’s recovery but also the UK economy. We fully support the Work Safe. Safe Work campaign and would encourage all our members not only to register for their FREE Trustmark status but to give the booklet to any of their customers before a job is started. We hope the campaign brings clarity and confidence to people when have work done in their homes.”

Work Safe. Safe Work has received support from other energy and construction industry sectors, including the Construction Leadership Council.

Carbon reductions for northern arena

Rinnai hot water systems are projected to produce ‘significant’ carbon reductions at a huge indoor arena in the North of England. The company has produced a designed system based on its R290 high-temperature heat pump. This arena regularly hosts large events such as concerts, conferences, theatre plays, exhibitions, live music and other conventions – so the site must have an energy efficient and carbon-reducing hot water system to achieve NetZero.
