BEAMA report addresses energy efficiency in homes

BEAMA has published a milestone report and series of white papers outlining the urgent action needed to address energy efficiency in UK Homes as a first step toward Net Zero by 2050.

BEAMA said that we wait for the UK Net Zero and Heat and Building’s strategy, never has the urgency to address decarbonisation in UK homes been felt more strongly.

'Time is not on our side. As the future energy infrastructure emerges our homes must be ready to connect to it. We have less than 30 years to make UK homes fit for the future. We must prepare 29 million existing homes and millions of new build properties to use energy in a different way.'

This report sets out the scale of the task ahead, and calls for Government and industry to urgently agree a detailed roadmap and delivery plan as part of a national retrofit program. It is hoped the expected Heat and Buildings strategy will go some way in achieving that.

It brings into focus the issues currently facing domestic building efficiency, and existing regulatory compliance. There are potentially huge savings consumers could be making on their energy bills today through the timely application of least regret measures, including system optimisation of heating systems, best practice heating controls, and adequate insulation and storage.

Howard Porter, BEAMA chief executive said: 'Decisive action now will ensure the UK can lead on this agenda and will help to establish a flourishing green jobs market in the UK. The scale of the task ahead is huge, and we must urgently address steps that can be taken now to reduce the longer-term infrastructure cost of Net Zero. Our approach at BEAMA adopts the ‘fabric first’ principle and in doing so we will equip UK homes for Net Zero.’
